PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThis study aims to ascertain whether a high anteversion of the femoral neck can influence the measurement of the caput-collum-diaphyseal (CCD) angle on a plain anteroposterior (AP) radiograph of the proximal femur.MATERIAL AND METHODSWe developed a new method of measuring the CCD angle and femoral neck version of the femur. This was done with the use of a computer program that utilised the measurement of the entire visualised area of femoral neck and shaft to calculate their long axis. Using this method, we measured the CCD angle and femoral neck version (FNV) of 100 photographed cadaveric femurs in two projections:...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYPersistent catabolism is one of the main causes of delayed healing in polytrauma patients. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of early administration of an anabolic steroid in combination with vitamin D on the process of bone healing in polytrauma patients.MATERIAL AND METHODSIn this prospective study, the patients with a serious trauma were divided into two groups (a control group and a treatment group), with the treatment group being treated with nandrolone decanoate, an anabolic steroid in combination with vitamin D. In all the patients, bone metabolism markers and sex hormone levels (men only) were...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYAnterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is one of the most common reconstruction surgeries. The unintended consequences of the surgery are hemarthrosis, blood loss, knee swelling and postoperative pain. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of a single dose of intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) on the postoperative parameters and functional status of the knee joint 3 months after surgery.MATERIAL AND METHODSIt is a prospective randomised clinical study. An intravenous injection of TXA equivalent to 15 mg/kg in 100 ml of saline solution was administered to the test group during the surgery (20 minutes before...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYIn this study we aimed to investigate the clinical and radiographic results of AO/OTA 31 A3 fractures operated on with either a proximal femoral lateral locking plate or short cephalomedullary nails.MATERIAL AND METHODS/RESULTSMedical data of patients treated with either implant were evaluated retrospectively. Patients > 55 years old sustaining an AO 31 A3 type fracture with a minimum follow-up of one year from two institutions were included in the study.RESULTSIn all, 22 patients in the plate group and 30 patients in the nail group were included. All patients achieved union excluding the patients with failure....

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe purpose of this study was to evaluate if the fixation method of a posterior fragment in trimalleolar ankle fractures affects the surgical outcomes.MATERIAL AND METHODSA retrospective evaluation was made of all the cases of trimalleolar fractures over a 9-year period in a trauma center. Patients aged 18 - 70 years were enrolled in the study. Patients were separated into 2 groups according to the fixation method (A - P percutaneous screw, and posterior open reduction - internal fixation). The fractures were classified according to the AO classification system and the Haraguchi posterior malleolar fracture classification...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYIn this study, we retrospectively reviewed a consecutive case series of first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint arthroscopies performed in our department over a span of six years. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of arthroscopic treatment for various first MTP joint pathologies.MATERIAL AND METHODSA total of 36 patients that underwent first MTP joint arthroscopy between January 2014 and December 2019 were reviewed. The mean age at the time of surgery was 38.3 years (range, 14-65), with no gender predominance (19 males). All arthroscopies were performed by a single surgeon using a 2.7 mm arthroscope...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYAfter the surgical treatment of injuries of the lower extremities or osteotomies, patients are frequently asked to partially load the affected leg during the first weeks of rehabilitation. The patient's compliance to the prescribed weight bearing limit and their ability to regain a physiological gait as soon as possible are necessary for a fast rehabilitation without complications.MATERIAL AND METHODS/RESULTSTo support patients during this important phase of recovery, we developed a feedback and analysis system that is able to provide feedback concerning loading and roll over behavior to the patient. The system is based...

In patients with defect bone growth and dwarfism, fractures of the weight bearing skeleton are relatively rare due to their reduced mobility. When they do occur, their treatment and potential surgery are complicated. The commonly used therapeutic procedures are not applicable, the available implants are not suitable, if a surgery is necessary. An individual approach and often times also improvisation is needed. It is important to realize that these patients do not suffer from an intellectual disability and are fully aware of their physical impairment, which we must not make worse without an effort for adequate treatment. This case study presents our...

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a worldwide problem. We present a case of flexor tenosynovitis due to tuberculosis in the hand and wrist. A 42-year-old man presented to the outpatient clinic with a 2-year history of a slowly growing mass over the volar aspect of the left wrist. His MRI showed multiple rice bodies in the wrist and hand. An open biopsy was performed. Pathology specimens showed granulomatous lesions with central necrosis. The purified protein derivative (PPD) test was positive. In this case, granulomatous lesions with central necrosis, rice bodies, and positive PPD test confirmed the diagnosis of TB in the wrist and hand. There was no other...
