PURPOSE OF THE STUDYRetrograde nailing represents an established fixation method for fractures of the distal femur and offers in femoral shaft fractures an alternative to the existing technique of antegrade nailing. The aim of this study was to investigate in a retrospective analysis the results of retrograde nailing in distal femoral fractures and selected cases of femoral shaft fractures. Emphasis was posed on long-term functional outcome, especially in daily activities.MATERIALRetrograde femoral nailing was used from 1999 untill 2006 in two Level 1 trauma centers for the treatment of distal femoral (AO/ASIF-type 33) and femoral shaft...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo define the role of ultrasonography in the diagnostic algorithm for patients with shoulder joint injury and to show its potential for the detection of rotator cuff tears and Hill-Sachs lesions.MATERIAL AND METHODSA group of 52 patients with clinical signs of shoulder disorders following trauma who were treated in the 2005-2006 period. After ultrasonographic examination, all patients were surgically treated by arthroscopy. In 12 of them an additional magnetic resonance imaging was carried out before surgery. The results of ultrasonography were compared with arthroscopic findings in terms of detection of full-thickness...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYIn a retrospective study, to evaluate the results of surgical treatment of hallux rigidus on the basis of clinical rating, radiographic findings and visual analogue scale (VAS).MATERIALThe group included 68 patients, 38 women and 30 men, treated at the orthopaedic ward of the Hospital České Budějovice in the period from April 2004 to June 2007. The average age of the patients was 58.6 years (range, 34 to 79). Right and left feet were affected in 42 and 26 patients, respectively. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 30 months.METHODSSurgery was undertaken only after all means of conservative treatment had been used. Indications...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYIn a retrospective study, to analyze long-term radiographic results of two surgical procedures used to treat congenital scoliosis.MATERIAL AND METHODSA total of 685 patients with congenital scoliosis were treated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Bohunice Teaching Hospital in Brno, between 1976 and 2007. Of these, 102 patients, with an average age of 6.6 years at the time of surgery, were treated by simple bony fusion, and 22 children, with an average age of 10.2 years, underwent instrumented hemivertebra excision via simultaneous anterior and posterior exposures involving fixation with cannulated compression...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe aim of the study was to analyze a group of patients who had undergone multilevel osteotomy of long bones and medication therapy for osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).MATERIAL AND METHODSThe group included 14 OI patients (nine girls and five boys) operated on in the years 1996 to 2006, who ranged in age from 3 to 17 years (average, 8.2 years). Due to residual deformation following a fracture of or because of treatment for acute trauma to long bones of the lower extremities, the patients underwent multilevel osteotomy with the use of osteosynthesis (Prevot's rod, six patients; Kirschner's wire, three patients; Küntcher's...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate the efficacy of magnetic resonance (MR) examination in intra- and extra- articular shoulder disorders, in comparison with arthroscopic findings, in patients with both acute injuries and chronic problems of the shoulder.MATERIAL AND METHODSConventional MR images and MR arthrograms of the shoulder were obtained in 35 patients treated between January 2004 and January 2006. Each MR image was evaluated by five radiologists experienced in assessing findings on the musculoskeletal system. Subsequently, the patients underwent shoulder arthroscopy performed by shoulder arthroscopy surgeons. Each detailed arthroscopic...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYBy presenting the results of treatment of secondary pyomyositis of deep hip muscles, to draw attention to the seriousness of this complication occurring in association with pelvic and lumbo-sacral infections.MATERIAL AND METHODSThe course of disease was evaluated retrospectively in a group of 13 patients with an average age of 65.8 years treated in the period from April 2004 to June 2007. The imaging methods used included native radiography, ultrasonography (SONO), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Markers of inflammation, i.e., C-creative protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and WBC differential...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate and compare proximal humeral fractures treated either by plate osteosynthesis with angular-stable screws or by intramedullary nailing, and to define the indications optimal for use of either technique.MATERIALThe study comprised 97 patients. The proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) plate was used in 49 patients (31 women and 18 men); with age average 57.4 years (women, 64.5 and men, 45.3 years). By the AO classification, 12 patients with type A, 15 with type B, and 22 with type C fractures. The Targon PH nail was used in 48 patients (32 women and 16 men) at an average age of 65.3 years (women,...

This report describes the case of a young male who had been followed-up between the ages of 14-21 years at different health facilities for symptoms initially considered to be caused by tumor, then by chronic osteomyelitis or ankylosing spondylitis and finally diagnosed as the SAPHO syndrome. Musculoskeletal symptoms of the SAPHO syndrome include focal, probably aseptic chronic osteomyelitis, synovitis and formation of hyperostoses. Therapy of the SAPHO syndrome is predominantly conservative. However, in this case we had to employ arthroscopic synovectomy first, for severe synovitis resistant to any conservative therapy approach. Later, left total hip...
