PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate the outcome in patients treated by proximal row carpectomy at a follow-up of at least 12 months.MATERIALA total of 28 patients were treated by proximal row carpectomy for degenerative arthritis of the wrist due to previous trauma to the wrist or avascular necrosis of the lunate. Of them, 24 underwent a follow-up examination at least 12 months post-operatively. Proximal row carpectomy was indicated in 11 patients for scaphoid non-union advance collapse (SNAC-wrist), in five patients for scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC-wrist), in four patients for inveterate dislocation of the wrist, and in four patients...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate the mid-term results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using a Medin Modular joint prosthesis in a standard design preserving the posterior cruciate ligament.MATERIALThe study comprised 206 consecutive total knee arthroplasties, 10 bilateral, 60 in men and 136 in women. Twelve patients died of causes unrelated to the surgery and 14 knee replacements were lost to follow-up. A total of 180 were evaluated at an average follow-up of 6.5 years (range, 5 to 8.7 years). The patients ranged in age from 43 to 84 years (average, 69.5 years). The basic indication for surgery was osteoarthritis in 179 and rheumatoid arthritis...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYDistal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability often develops after distal forearm fracture or severe dislocation of the wrist with damage to its stabilising structures. The instability is usually diagnosed as a chronic condition and only rarely at the time of injury. When the stabilising structures are not treated adequately soon after injury, instability develops and is accompanied with pain, restricted range of motion and reduced grip strength. This study presents the option of chronic instability treatment by tenodesis with use of the palmaris longus tendon. Its aim is to remind the broad medical community of this issue.MATERIALBetween...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo assess the effects of medical history, fracture type, method of treatment and complications on the risk of death in elderly patients treated for proximal femoral fracture.MATERIAL AND METHODSThe group comprised of 269 patients (219 women and 50 men) older than 70 years who underwent surgery for proximal femoral fracture at the Level I Traumacentre between January 2003 and June 2005. The follow-up ranged from 12 to 38 months. In a prospective consecutive manner the following was recorded: age, gender, serious internal diseases, pre-injury level of mobility, place of living before injury, fracture type (AO classification),...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo present the results of surgical repair of ruptures of the distal tendon of the biceps brachii muscle and thus show the adequacy of this treatment.MATERIALBetween 1987 and 2006, 19 patients had surgery for distal biceps tendon rupture. Only one side was affected in each patient. All patients were men between 28 and 69 years (average age, 47.5 years) at the time of injury (surgery). When the patients were evaluated at the end of 2007, 18 patients were included, because one died a year after surgery.METHODSThe surgical repair always included a single-incision anatomical reattachment into the radial tuberosity....

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe surgical treatment of osteoporotic vertebral body fractures is associated with many complications. Vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) are minimally invasive procedures allowing us to strengthen the vertebral body and thus stabilize it. The aim of this non-randomized study is to evaluate a group of patients treated by VP and KP procedures and to discuss related risks.MATERIALBetween September 2005 and October 2007, a total of 32 patients (37 vertebrae) were treated by the VP and KP techniques. Vertebroplasty was used in 21 and kyphoplasty in 11 patients. In this initial group, four patients were excluded from...

Fractures of the forearm represent common injuries. Understanding the anatomy and funkction of the radius, ulna, interosseous membrane, proximal and distal radioulnar joints is critical to appropriate management. Diagnosis can readily be made by examination and radiographs. Well established surgical approaches including the anterior Henry, dorsal Thompson, and ulnar approaches provide excellent access to both the radius and ulna. Multiple fracture patterns are recognized including isolated radius and ulna fractures, combined fractures, Galeazzi fractures, and Monteggia fractures. Surgical management regularly requires open reduction internal fixation...

Pelvic fractures are serious injuries. For the diagnosis and treatment of unstable pelvic ring fracture in a haemodynamically unstable patient, it is necessary to use standard procedures with the objective to stabilise both blood circulation and the pelvic ring. According to the state of the patient, the choice is between life-saving surgery, damage control surgery and procedures of early or delayed stabilisation of the pelvic ring. The survival of injured patients as well as their further health condition will depend on the method of treatment used in the first hours after injury.

The review article deals with issues related to the evaluation of life quality, using questionnaire techniques, in patients with degenerative disorders of the lumbar spine. The topic is introduced with the complexity of health definition and life quality evaluation. Then degenerative spinal disorders are defined. The options for assessment of success in surgical treatment of degenerative spine by both objective and subjective methods are presented. The use of questionnaires and distinction between generic and specific ones are described, advantages and disadvantages are analysed and the most important types of questionnaires currently used in international...

Reconstruction with the use of custom-made implants aims at optimal replacement of lost or damaged bone structures and restoration of their funkction. In this study the development and construction of a custom-made implant and the operative technique used for the treatment of an extensive tibial defect are described. The patient was a 65-year-old man treated for over 20 years for psoriatic arthritis and severe instability of the right knee, particularly in the frontal plane, with a worsening varus deformity. The radiogram showed an extensive destruction of the medial tibial condyle that also deeply involved the lateral condyle. The extent of defect...
